naptime musings: home 'making'

home.ma.ker > a married woman who is in charge of her household (merriam webster)

first of all...let me preface this post by saying 'no, donald miller is not paying me to repeatedly reference him on my blog.'  i just like his stuff, ok?  and lately he's been saying quite a few things that are meeting me right where i am...today's meeting...

my morning was spent with my sweet and talented friend erin and our pairs of munchkins.  we achieved probably a dozen 'half conversations' {mamas of little ones know what i'm talking about...you never really complete a conversation when they are buzzing around}.  much of what we talked about involved the chapter of our stories that we are living right now and how we are finding value as mothers and wives...we pondered ways of more intentionally connecting with other women in similar situations in an effort to weave our collective stories together more.  our time together generated energy and inspiration around my daily grind.  we joked about all the amazing things we accomplish these days between 1pm and 3pm {a.k.a. nap time!}...what the heck were we doing with all our time BEFORE we had kids?!?!

my morning with erin was just one of a series of visits with kindred spirits this week {last night with my BLOOM compadre and perpetual inspire-er amy & lunch on tuesday with my new, fabulous, gonna-learn-so-much-from-this-chick friend alicia}  ...during each of these divine appointments i felt my roots spreading out and drinking in the nourishment i need to grow where i have been planted during this season of my life...at home...as a mother, a wife, a friend, a home 'maker'.

i've been thinking a lot lately about my role at home...how valuable it is to me {despite my history as a driven career woman}.  it's not easy.  it's tiring.  sometimes it's thankless.  sometimes it gets dirty {especially when your 2 year old insists on pooping anywhere but the potty}...but i'm starting to 'get it'.  i'm starting to experience a deepening of my spirituality and my relationship with God through the everyday occurrences that come along with being a mom and a wife and a maker of my home.  and when i look back at that definition of 'home maker' it's clear to me that daily i will need to lean heavily on the grace and love of Christ...being IN CHARGE of a household is no small task...can i get an 'amen'!

which brings me to donald miller...
"...you learn about God while learning to fly a plane or raising a child or planting crops in a field. It’s not a hard, fast rule to be sure, but the idea is that sitting around looking at your spiritual belly button isn’t going to provide an object lesson for your faith. The idea is that faith makes sense in the context of some other pursuit."
right now that pursuit for me is making my home what it should be for my husband, my daughter, my son, and any visitors that venture down our gravel driveway, up the stairs, onto our porch, and into our life...

...i hear stirring upstairs...naptime is over...today's naptime achievements: 1 blog post and 1 peach crisp...not bad...

what's your latest pursuit and how is it providing you with the context for deeper spirituality?
