simple things

since returning from my vacation i've noticed that i am focusing more on the joy of simple things.  like my new guest bath lightswitch cover that once looked like this...
{yes - that is wallpaper...the rest of the room used to be covered in it too}
and now looks like this...
or the fact that nobody around our house bats an eye when lucy shows up for lunch like this...
and insists on wearing these with her pajamas {or any other outfit for that matter}...
and then there's the unmatched fun of using cotton balls to make it snow inside...
{again - please note my little fashionista}
i know that i miss so many of these simple joys every day but i'm definitely paying closer attention lately.  there will soon come a day when those cinderella slippers won't fit anymore and those cotton balls will be used for removing make-up instead of make-believe...

did you know that our recent trip to puerto rico was my first 'real' vacation since my honeymoon 6 years ago {sad, i know}?  i spent 5 days at a beachside resort outside of san juan without one single responsibility.  i'm not saying i want to live my life that way, but for someone who has a general tendency to take on way more responsibility than i should this little hiatus was much appreciated and reminded me of the simplicity that i so desperately need.
here's my list of top 5 vacation accomplishments {darn!  my over-achieving personality can not rest!}...

::1::  allowed myself to only be exposed to the kind of surfing that actually involves water...not the internet...

::2::  officially rekindled my love affair with fiction...2 novels completed {the help and the shadow of the wind...both of which i would highly recommend}.  i hadn't read that much for pleasure in the past 2 years!

::3::  drank multiple cups of coffee straight through without having to reheat in the microwave {i know there are some moms out there that know what a luxury this is...when i'm at home i average 3 reheats per cup in between cooking breakfast, breaking up fights, wiping tushies, refilling sippy cups...you catch my drift...}

::4::  schedule, schmedule...i did not plan one single day...no need when all that is on your to-do list is
- sleep
- eat
- read
- walk to the poolside cabana
- brush teeth
- shower {optional}

::5::  countless uninterrupted conversations with my best friend that reminded me how much we really do enjoy each other and how important it is for mommy and daddy to just be husband and wife sometimes
{i was going to put - 'got a pretty good head start on a summer tan so that i don't have to look at my ghostly white skin in the mirror anymore' - but that sounded so vain}

so here's to simple things...share some of yours with me over the next few days and let's vow to keep noticing...and being grateful...

step one - open the computer

my facebook post tonight reads - 'cautiously dipping my toes back into the facebook waters after a week off...'

i really don't know how else to say it.

for the past week i have not looked at a computer screen {or watched a single tv show for that matter} and it has been gloriously refreshing.

since i got home yesterday i have been staring down my macbook like it's pandora's box right there on my kitchen counter and i'm afraid to open it back up.

tonight i finally did.  step one completed.  tomorrow i am going to try for a real post with pictures and all...

be patient with me folks...these transitions take time...

i 'heart' etsy

if you haven't discovered the overwhelmingly creative world of etsy...please give it a try.  you may just love it as much as i do.

here are a couple of my finds this month...
i used to have one of those awesome self-inking address stamps that you order off one of those office websites.  it was fine but since we moved and i needed a new one i tried etsy.  i literally could have spent hours looking at all the possibilities but here's what i decided on...
it's a rubber stamp so i can switch up the ink i use...pretty fun...

and why settle for one of those cheap-o aluminum dog tags when you can get one of these made out of recycled bottle caps for the same price...

i have a few more orders on the way so i will share those with you when they arrive.  in the meantime - let me know if you have any favorite etsy finds...

who knew stairs could be so much fun???

DISCLAIMER:  this post may only be of interest to immediate family members who can't get enough of my awesome kids

we had this super plush carpet put down on the stairs of our new house and it's so comfy, cozy that my kids spend half of their day on them.

here's a video of oliver doing what he typically does {despite having a cold and teething} - smiling, laughing, and just generally being adorable...reveling in the fact that he can know move up and down stairs with relative ease...
OLIVER ON THE STAIRS

and here's lucy doing what she typically does - using her massive expanse of an imagination to create role-playing scenarios {which often include school and teaching and making up songs to teach lessons}.  this kids seriously amazes me.  she sets stuff like this up completely on her own...
{sorry about the shaky camera hand...i was holding a squirmy oliver in one arm}

this time next week...

there may be snow in my yard right now, BUT...
this time next week...

...i will be here...
basking in the puerto rican sun.
reading a book.
napping.
maybe sipping a fruity beverage.
just generally enjoying a few precious days of not changing a single diaper and not wiping a single toddler tushy {a big shout-out to the grandparents who will be doing that for me!}

sorry...i'm not trying to rub it in...i'm just a tad bit excited and wanted you to share in my joy...

my village

there is an african proverb i'm sure you've heard - 'it takes a village to raise a child'.

i've thought a lot about that quote over the past month.  now that i am home full time with my two littles, and regularly feeling the weight of caring for and nurturing them, i sense an almost desperate need for others to help me.  raising children is a tremendous job and surely no one person is equipped to provide them with everything they need.  before we moved to tennessee i was regularly supported and encouraged by my 'village'.  we didn't all live within arm's reach of one another {as the term 'village' traditionally implies} but these people did create a community that almost felt wrapped around me like a soft blanket - keeping me warm and cozy even during the most chilling conditions of life.  they still do...

i wanted you to see the faces of some of my 'village people' and the time i spent with them right before our big move...they are seriously heros to me and most definitely post-worthy during these changing seasons in my life...

my bff meg...
...there are truly no words for a soul sister like this.
the super-cool piece of artwork she gave me for my new home.
it is full of reminders of my season in charlotte...
{you can make your own at shape collage}
some of my girls gathered to wish me well.  i swore i was going to get one big group shot but of course i started drinking wine and chatting and forgot.  here's at least some of us...
...and a few more of those beautiful ladies...

a special evening with my new charlotte church family.  these are just a few of the amazing students whom i have served alongside for the past several months...
so many friends who love our family well...
who make us smile...
and laugh...
they surprised us with this custom canvas painted by my sweet, talented friend arin...
everyone left their fingerprint leaf on the tree...so cool.
it looks great in our new house...
...makes it feel more like home...

to all my 'village people' near and far...xoxoxo

the accident

lucy has been wearing big girl panties for about 7 months now.  she rarely has an accident.  she is almost completely independent in the bathroom.  i love not having to buy diapers for her {not to mention changing them}.

today i bravely took both kids to chick-fil-a for lunch...by myself.

lucy peed on one of the platforms in the play area.
2 of the other kids mistook it for a new 'water feature' and began splashing around.

after quickly informing the manager of our little accident, watching the play area get shut down, throwing our stuff in the trash as soon as i could, and dragging a soaking wet lucy out {while she repeatedly yelled -
'i want my chocolate milk!!!'}...
i am considering going back to diapers...
